Scientific Program

  • 14th September: Excursion to Neogene of northern Vienna basin and Eggenburg
    Target is the largest fossil oyster shell bed worldwide that has been excavated from Lower Miocene tidala flat deposits of the Korneuburg basin north of Vienna. Several classical localities of shallow-water Lower Miocene deposits of the Paratethys at the eastern margin of the Bohemian massif will be visited. We also plan to visit the Krahueletz Museum in Eggenburg, which harbours important palaeontological collections. Excursion fee includes travel costs, excursion guide, packed lunch and entrance to the museum.

  • 17th September: Excursion to Neogene of southern Vienna basin
    We will visit classical Middle and Upper Miocene localities, which are representative of regional stages of of the Paratethys Sea. Targets are the reef development of the Badenian Leitha limestone, the transgression of the Sarmatian Sea and deeper water deposits of Lake Pannon. It is planned to visit a regional museum in Bad Vöslau with excellent fossil collections from the Vienna Basin. Excursion fee includes travel costs, excursion guide, packed lunch and entrance to the museum.
